One of Michael's many qualities was his genuine interest in people. He wasn't just helping his pupils "learn to sing", like a driving instructor. He was always excited to share their journey. It was only because Michael wanted to know if there had been any other singers in my family that I began researching and discovered the story of my Great Aunt the professional coloratura soprano. Michael would sit in his big chair, sagely nodding "I thought as much", as I reported back on progress each week. He was so much more than a voice coach.
