Your ears need work

My son Dan has always dreamed of being in the theatre. He has acting skills but was not a singer until he met Michael!

My mum loves music and she assured me that most people could be taught to sing in tune with the right teacher, so I decided to give it a go: We found Michael's academy, I spoke with him on the phone and was honest about not being sure that Dan would ever be able to sing, but would he listen and give us an honest view. Dan was 14 at the time.

That first lesson was painful to listen to as Dan did not hit a note in tune for a full 50 minutes, yet Michael was so kind. After finally hitting a note just before the hour was up, I was pleased he had done that at least, but felt sure Michael would give kind and honest feedback that this wasn't the path for him. Instead, he said that Dan's voice had real quality for his age but that his 'ears need work'! He said he would be keen to work with him. We were thrilled! From that time on until recently (Dan is now 18), Michael championed him, challenged him, gave him opportunity and went the extra mile. Dan can now sing and is improving all the time.

Personally I shall remember Michael with great fondness as well as gratitude – every time he called to arrange/rearrange appointments he was just so kind and so thoughtful... I was never in any doubt that Michael genuinely wanted Dan to do well. Dan is now on a musical theatre course and applying to pursue this at University. Thank you for your expertise and your kindness, Michael.
